I am delighted to welcome you to our website. If you are a current member of the St Margaret’s community, I hope that this website will be a useful source of information as well as a celebration of the vibrant life of the school. If you are a visitor, I do hope it will inspire you to come and visit St Margaret’s School for Girls for yourself.
The only girls’ school in Aberdeen, St Margaret’s has around 370 pupils ranging in age from 3 to 18. Our school is large enough to offer flexibility and choice in terms of the curriculum and extra-curricular activities, but small enough to ensure that each girl is well known within a friendly and family atmosphere. St Margaret’s staff are experts in teaching girls and are committed to supporting each girl to be all that she can be both inside and outside the classroom.
At St Margaret’s we have specialised in girls’ education since 1846. We believe that a single- sex education offers girls the space in which their intellectual and physical identity can blossom, a space which is free from stereotype, full of challenge and rich with opportunity and care. It is in this sort of environment that girls can develop the self-esteem and confidence which will enable them to fulfil their potential and make a positive impact on the world.
We provide our pupils at all ages and stages with a rich variety of extra-curricular opportunities. Music, sport, debating, drama, dance, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and many other activities are available. These are enjoyable in themselves, but they also help girls to develop the skills and personal qualities which they will require to be successful and happy beyond school.
At St Margaret’s we are not complacent: we are continually refining and developing our provision to meet the changing needs of our pupils and the demanding world of the twenty-first century.
If you would like to find out more about St Margaret’s School for Girls, I would be delighted to meet with you and your daughter to discuss her hopes and aspirations and to give you a personal tour of our wonderful school.

About St Margaret's School for Girls
Founded in 1846, St Margaret’s School for Girls is the oldest all-through girls’ school in Scotland. We are an independent charitable trust that warmly welcomes girls of all denominations and faiths.
St Margaret’s School offers a fully-rounded education, through which we seek to realise the full potential of each girl. We endeavour to provide each of our girls with a sound academic education, essential for entry to higher and further education, and to industry, business and the professions.
Our girls are socially aware and are prepared to cope with the challenges of the competitive world beyond school. They are encouraged to show concern for those in the wider community within and beyond Aberdeen.
Girls are taught to value themselves as individuals and to show respect and consideration when working with others; to develop a sense of fun and a sense of responsibility; to have a positive attitude; and to be flexible and adaptable. We encourage our staff and pupils to contribute to the wider development of education in Scotland. We are very proud of our girls and of the education we provide at St Margaret’s.
Why choose a single-sex education?
Extensive research and academic results show that a single-sex education offers significant strengths and benefits and is very effective for girls, allowing them to excel in all areas of the curriculum.
It is our belief that the single-sex setting helps to create a sympathetic but challenging learning environment: we want all our girls to be confident individuals.
