St Margaret’s School for Girls has been named ‘Scottish Independent Secondary School of the Year’ by the Sunday Times Good Schools Guide, Parent Power.
Head teacher Anna Tomlinson said the accolade was a ‘reflection of the outstanding commitment of all our staff, pupils and parents of St Margaret’s’.
“We are absolutely thrilled to have been chosen as Scottish Independent School of the Year 2020 by The Sunday Times,” she said.
“At St Margaret’s, we are exceptionally proud of all our girls, from the youngest to the oldest, and the hard work and motivation they show on a daily basis. We are also very proud of the dedication and skill of our teaching staff who know each and every girl well, and work hard to nurture individual talents.
“While supporting each girl to be the best she can be academically is at the heart of a St Margaret’s education, we also provide a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities to enhance and develop our girls’ interests and skills.”
In August this year, pupils in the senior school returned outstanding exam results, with those in S4 achieving a 95% pass rate (A-C) at National 5, with 85% of grades at A or B level. The school attained a 97% pass rate (A-C) at Higher level for S5 pupils with 89% of grades at A or B level.
There were also exceptional results at Advanced Higher, demonstrated by the pass rate of 99% (A-C grade) and with 93% of grades awarded at A or B level.
Sixth year leavers took up places at universities throughout the UK, including the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Central St Martin’s School of Art in London and the prestigious Russell Group of universities, including Oxford, Edinburgh and the London School of Economics.
Sunday Times Parent Power Editor Alastair McCall, praised the school on its success.
“Offering a distinctive education to around 400, St Margaret’s girls are taught that no career is off-limits and everything is possible through a combination of talent and hard work,” he said.
“Girls are encouraged to contribute to wider school life and not just in the classroom and they leave equipped to succeed at the next level and in life more generally beyond.”
