7 Junior WWII Aberdeen Trail

This week 7 Junior walked around Aberdeen to learn more about what life was like during World War II. Here is what the girls thought of the experience:

On the 28th of September our class (7 Junior) went on a walk to learn more about World War 2 around a part of Aberdeen near our school (St Margarets) with a local historian, Mr Patterson.

Currently our topic is World War 2 and we were delighted with all the information we learnt from Mr Paterson.

We walked to Rosemount Place where we met up with Mr Patterson then we walked down to Richmond Terrace and learnt fascinating facts about transportation and where trams used to come by.

Then we walked a little further and we learnt about what the street surfaces would have been in the 1940’s, cobbles and granite compared to what they are made of today.

Later we went into a real bomb shelter and listened to an actual lady talk about the air raids.

Overall this was one of our best learning experiences.

This morning 7 Junior went on a walk around Aberdeen city centre. Our current topic is WW2 and so during the walk we learnt a lot of new information about how Aberdeen was affected in the war. As a class we really enjoyed the walk.

We think it was a great opportunity to get some fresh air all while learning loads of facts about WW2.

We learnt about transport before and after the war and we even learnt about air raid shelters. We were so excited when Mr Patterson (our guide) said that we were allowed to go into a real air raid shelter from WW2. We listened to the air raid sirens and we also listened to a recording of a woman who had to go into the shelter multiple times during WW2. We learned about the blackest night in Aberdeen and how they sat in the air raid shelter for hours on end with nothing to entertain themselves. All they could do was sit and wait.

We had a great morning and have learnt so much more about WW2 .

We recently went on a WW2 walk around Aberdeen city. Mr Patterson was our very knowledgeable guide, and we were very lucky to have him.

We learned about old trams, Anderson shelters and lots, lots more! We were very interested and involved in this walk and learned a lot about our old city like:

Did you ever wonder what the hooks on the side of old granite buildings are? Well they are called rosettes that were used to support the trams to go in the right direction.

We were also very lucky to go into an old Anderson shelter and experience how the world war two civilians felt.

Anderson shelters : An Anderson shelter was used in WW2 as a concrete shelter to protect civilians during an air raid.

Also a big thank you to Mr Patterson for his fantastic knowledge about this subject and a brilliant walk.

Thank you from all of us at 7 Junior.
