Volunteering in Action: Inspiring Service and Community Spirit

At a recent school assembly, students were given an inspiring insight into the power of volunteering and the positive impact it has on both individuals and the wider community. Student speakers, who have dedicated years to volunteer work, shared their experiences and reflections on the meaningful contributions they have made through various initiatives.

Nandi (IIIS) shared that one of the key highlights of her volunteering was her involvement in the 'Pastor’s Welcome' at her church. This special event, designed to introduce new members to the congregation and pastoral team, is a significant occasion requiring dedication and teamwork. Nandi described how she, alongside her mother, devoted an entire day to ensuring the event ran smoothly—helping with decorating, catering, and ushering. She emphasised how welcoming new people into a community can make a lasting difference and expressed how small acts of kindness create a warm and inclusive environment.

Lena (IVS) shared that she volunteers within the school at Nessy Club, an initiative that supports younger students in developing their literacy skills through an engaging online platform. Twice a week, she assists with logging students onto computers, taking registers, and providing guidance throughout the sessions. This opportunity, she explained, has not only helped the younger pupils but has also allowed her to build confidence, leadership skills, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Beyond school and church, Fiona's (VS) volunteering journey has extended to animal shelters, community centres, and charity fundraising. One of her most significant projects was a 2022 fundraiser for the Annika Linden Centre in Bali, a cause close to her heart. Inspired by a late friend’s wish, she and her peers sold sustainable flower sculptures, raising an incredible £2,000 to fund prosthetics and physiotherapy for those in need.

The assembly ended with an encouraging message for students to get involved in volunteering. The speakers reflected on how giving back to the community fosters personal growth, resilience, and joy. They reminded their peers that volunteering doesn’t require a huge time commitment—small efforts can lead to meaningful change.

With a range of volunteering opportunities available both within and outside of school, students were left inspired to take action and make a difference in their own ways.
