St Margaret’s whole-school sustainability focus this year has been on Global Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The Junior Sustainability Reps chose to support WaterAid with a fundraiser this term, having been inspired by Tanya Nhliziyo from WaterAid when she came to the school to talk on the changing effect that access to clean water has on communities worldwide.
Students chose to take part in the Pupil Pipeline Challenge where the girls worked together to move 10 litres of water over 50m, in just 20 minutes, without leaving their spots and spilling as little as possible! The pipeline models the journey that water takes from rainfall to our tap, and there are lots of places where it can leak or get spilled along the way. What comes out of our taps has come a long way and is very precious! Globally, one in three schools have no clean water or toilets. By joining the Pupil Pipeline, the girls learnt about global water issues and the importance of bringing clean water, safe toilets and good hygiene to other schools around the world.
Every girl who took part in the challenge did an amazing job and despite some soggy feet, the result of the challenge managed to raise £63.90. This money will go towards helping WaterAid projects such as bringing reliable and clean water to households, building new toilet blocks, laying and connecting new pipes and building new water storage tanks. Where there is water, communities can thrive.
