Girls at St Margaret’s Crochet Club have been weaving kindness and compassion through each stitch of their creations as they make items for random acts of crochet kindness. The idea stems from a global movement to create small crocheted items, often hearts, animals or flowers, and leave them in public places like parks or benches, for others to find. They are often left with a kind message telling the finder to take it home and enjoy it. The idea is to bring a little unexpected joy to someone’s day, to spread hope and comfort, and to create a ripple effect of positivity that spreads throughout the community.
This sense of community and the importance of giving back is embedded into the fabric of school life at St Margarets through various philanthropic programmes and initiatives. A sense of belonging is also cultivated through collaborative activities such as Crochet Club, as well as the many other extra-curricular activities that the school boasts. Engaging in an extra-curricular activity outside the classroom is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills and reduce stress. Some of the girls at Crochet Club commented on how mindful the process of crocheting is, something which helps with their focus and concentration. Though many of the girls are new to the skill, those experienced in crocheting are more than happy to lead by example through sharing their expertise and knowledge.
With each stitch, the girls are learning a sense of responsibility to both each other and the wider community.
